That is why the Steinway promise applies: anyone who trades in an Essex instrument for a new Steinway grand piano within ten 10 years will be reimbursed the full purchase price.
With a special shape of housing designed by Steinway & Sons, Essex grand pianos are much wider than other instruments of the same length, especially with respect to their curve. This allows the use of a larger soundboard, which creates a considerably fuller sound. The soundboard (Steinway design) is tapered towards the ends and can vibrate more freely, creating a more sonorous tone. The mechanism contains no plastic parts, being made completely from wood. It offers the necessary stability, a fast repetition rate, and a sensitive response thanks to the special geometry of the lever parts. Other Steinway features and designs have been incorporated, including notches and braces, the pinblock, the tuning pins, the strings, and the cast iron plate. In summary, all of this means that Essex pianos offer excellent value for money that is almost unprecedented.
